UAA men's basketball team adds another DI transfer

The UAA men's basketball team added another Division I transfer to its roster — the Seawolves' fourth of the recruiting season.

Malik Clements, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound guard from North Dakota State, has two seasons of eligibility, UAA said Tuesday when announcing the signing.

After starting 10 games and averaging 6.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore transfer for North Dakota State, Clements redshirted last season with a knee injury.

"He is a strong player who can guard bigger wings, and he is a good shooter with the additional skills to attack the basket off the dribble," UAA coach Rusty Osborne said in a press release from UAA. "His versatility will allow us a lot of flexibility with our perimeter players."

The Seawolves lost 10 players from last season's 21-8 team, leaving Osborne with a lot of roster spots to fill.

So far he's added two freshmen — including 6-8 forward Austin White of Ninilchik — and four Division I transfers.

The other three transfers are all seniors from University of the Pacific — 5-10 guard Maleke Haynes, 6-9 forward Jacob Lampkin and 6-4 guard D.J. Ursery. The other freshman is 6-1 guard Brennan Rymer of Sydney, Australia.

Clements, a first-team all-conference selection as a high school senior in Madison, Wisconsin, has shown a knack for knocking down 3-pointers. He canned 4 of 8 long-range shots in a 16-point effort against Illinois in November 2015 during his first season at NDSU, when he was fourth on the team with 30 triples.

Clements spent one season at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi, averaging 10 points and helping the Wildcats to a 25-5 record.

"Malik is used to winning and brings that attitude with him to UAA," Osborne said. "I know that the NDSU staff was disappointed that he was leaving as he would have played a big role for them, but they had nothing but positive things to say about him as a player, student, and teammate. We feel very fortunate to add someone as complete as him to our lineup."
