UAA's Kangogo sizzles in steeplechase to earn All-America honors

UAA junior Edwin Kangogo became a three-time All-American on Friday, setting a personal best and finishing sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of NCAA Division II track and field championships in Bradenton, Florida.

Kangogo secured his first All-America accolade in track and field to go along with two in cross country. He is UAA's second All-America at this year's meet, joining Dominik Notz, who placed third in Thursday's 10,000 meters.

Kangogo cleared the obstacles and water traps in 8 minutes, 56.21 seconds, the second-fastest in program history.

Senior Karolin Anders wrapped up her UAA career by placing ninth in the women's heptathlon, one spot away from All-America honors.

The eight-time All-American finished the seven-event display of all-around skill with 5,105 points. Anders, coming off her GNAC heptathlon title, on Friday competed in the javelin (118 feet, 4 inches), 800 meters (2:24.78), and long jump (17-7.5).

Sophomore Danielle McCormick of Soldotna, UAA's 800-meter record holder, won her 800-meter preliminary heat in 2:08.03 to advance to Saturday's finals.

Also advancing to Saturday's finals was the men's 1,600-meter relay squad. Nicholas Taylor, Liam Lindsay, Travis Turner and Adam Commandeur posted the fourth-fastest preliminary time, 3:10.65.

In the women's 1,600-meter relay preliminaries, seniors Jamie Ashcroft, Mary-Kathleen Cross and Haley Bezanson and freshman Vanessa Aniteye missed making the eight-team finals, finishing with the 10th-best time in 3:43.33.
