UAA's Friess, Aniteye grab GNAC track postseason honors

The UAA track and field teams collected three Great Northwest Athletic Conference postseason awards Tuesday.

Coach Michael Friess swept the men's and women's coach of the year honors, and sprinter Vanessa Aniteye garnered the GNAC Freshman of the Year award.

Friess, who concluded his 26th season at the helm, has been named GNAC coach of the year 14 times in track and field — seven times for outdoor track, seven times for indoor. At this year's GNAC championships, the Seawolves won both team titles and produced seven individual champions and two winning relay teams.

Aniteye, a native of Norderstedt, Germany, won the 400 meters in 54.88 seconds, the program's second-fastest time, and anchored the 400-meter relay team to victory in 47.76 seconds. Aniteye is the sixth Seawolf to win the award in seven seasons.
