The UAA volleyball team was on the road but middle blocker Vanessa Hayes got to play in front of a hometown crowd Saturday in a victory over Western Oregon.
Hayes, who hails from nearby Salem, Oregon, recorded career highs in kills (13) and digs (21) to boost the Seawolves in their 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 win in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.
After dropping the first set, UAA (12-7, 7-3 GNAC) squeaked out a win in the second set. The Seawolves played best in the third and fourth sets, hitting .500 and .235, respectively.
"It was a real inconsistent match from us," UAA coach Chris Green said by cellphone. "It's frustrating but it was good to be on the road and get a win."
Junior outside hitter Leah Swiss recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs.
Senior libero Keala Kaio-Perez tallied a team-high 21 digs, and freshman setter Casey Davenport contributed 38 assists.
"Leah did really well," Green said. "She wasn't as aggressive sometime as I would like, but her numbers are really good for an outside hitter."
Mariella Vandenkooy led Westeron Oregon (6-11, 2-8) with 18 of the team's 50 kills.
