UAF sweeps UAA in 1st weekend of Governor’s Cup hockey games

The first two games of the Governor's Cup in the books and the UAA hockey team is still searching for its first win of the season.

UAF defeated the Seawolves 3-2 Saturday at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks to sweep the weekend series 2-0. On Friday, the Nanooks beat the Seawolves 6-2 at Sullivan Arena.

The Seawolves and Nanooks will play four more times this season with two games at Sullivan Arena in December at two games at the Carlson Center in February.

Using their sixth starting lineup in as many games, UAA (0-5-1) struck first on Saturday when senior winger Austin Azurdia scored off his own rebound four minutes into the game.

The lead lasted until late in the period when UAF winger Ross Heidt scored on an unassisted wrister to even the score heading into the locker room.

The Nanooks (2-3-1) took the lead for good on a Zach Frye goal in the slot that made it 2-1 with two minutes to go in the second period. They went up 3-1 midway through the third period on a Colton Leiter goal.

UAA freshman forward Jordan Xavier notched his third goal of the season midway through the third period, but UAA couldn't find the equalizer in the remaining 10 minutes.

UAA recorded 11 of its 17 shots in the third period — its best offensive period of the game — but UAF outshot the Seawolves by 20 on the night.

Both teams were dismal on the power play. UAA finished 0 of 4 and UAF went 0 of 5.

UAA senior goalie Olivier Mantha notched 34 saves for his fifth 30-plus save game of the season and UAF's Anton Martinsson registered 15 saves.

The first two games of the Governor's Cup were nonconference games for both teams, so the Seawolves will open Western Collegiate Hockey Associaton play on Nov. 4 when they play Lake Superior State (1-3-2, 0-1-1 WCHA) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
