UAA gymnastics team hits 190-point mark in 2nd meet of season

The UAA gymnastics team broke the 190-point barrier Sunday to complete a sweep of its season-opening series against Cortland State of New York.

Two days after posting a season-opening score of 188.825, the Seawolves rode strong efforts from a trio of freshmen to score 190.975 points.

Leading the way in front of an Alaska Airlines Center crowd of 616 was Isabelle Fox, who topped the all-around with 38.725 points.

Fox won the floor exercise with a score of 9.775 and placed third in the other three events. She scored 9.625 in vault, 9.675 on bars and 9.650 on beam.

Hope Nelson placed second on uneven parallel bars (9.725) and fifth in balance beam (9.6), and Michaela Phillips grabbed second place in floor (9.7).

"We have been seeing our freshmen really step up so far," first-year UAA coach Tanya Ho said in a press release from the school. "We have three freshmen in our beam lineup and they hit both nights. They don't really have time to be freshmen – they're getting put in right away."

The Seawolves also got a standout effort from sophomore Mackenzie Miller, who won the bars with a 9.825, equaling the seventh-best score in program history.

Also turning in notable efforts were junior Kaylin Mancari, the runner-up in beam (9.7), and senior Kendra Daniels, the runner-up in vault (9.65).

"I think we did well," Ho said. "I was expecting us to just repeat Friday night, and I would have been happy with that, but I think we did improve, and all those little tenths added up to about two points."

Cortland, a Division III team from New York that totaled 183.2 points, boasted two event winners. Rachel Filipski topped the vault with a 9.675 and Emma Schulz won the beam with a 9.75.

In Friday's meet, Fox won the all-around (38.375) and floor (9.7), Nelson won the beam (9.8) and bars (9.75) and Filipski took the vault (9.55).
