UAA runner Caroline Kurgat, who enters this week's NCAA Division II national championships as the favorite in two events, was named the NCAA West Region track athlete of the year Wednesday.

Kurgat will run in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at this week's national championships in Charlotte, North Carolina. In earlier meets this season, she clocked the second-fastest time in Division II history in the 10,000 meters (32:33.24) and the third-fastest time in the 5,000 meters (15:41.21).

A junior from Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat won the Division II cross-country championship earlier this school year.
