UAA volleyball team pushes record to 5-0 with pair of victories

The Seawolves won one match with ease and another by the skin of their teeth Friday at the Division II West Region Volleyball Showcase in Irvine, California.

UAA started the day in trouble, losing the first two sets of a match against Cal State-San Marcos. But the team didn't lose another set the rest of the day.

The Seawolves roared back to beat San Marcos in five sets, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-8. A couple of hours later they returned to the court to sweep tournament-host Concordia-Irvine, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20.

The victories keep UAA undefeated in five matches. The Seawolves play two more tournament matches on Saturday.

"There are still a lot of facets that we need to improve, but I'll take 5-0, with a chance to finish the non-conference season strong tomorrow," UAA coach Chris Green said in a release from the school.

Chrisalyn Johnson slammed a combined 25 kills and Tara Melton had a combined 14 block assists to lead the Seawolves.

Melton was a star in the first match, hitting .562 with 10 kills and one error and getting assists on eight of UAA's 15 blocks. Eve Stephens delivered a match-high 14 kills and Johnson added 12.

Johnson's effort was marred by 11 hitting errors that left her with a .024 attack percentage, but she came back strong in the second match to hit .310 with 13 kills against four errors while getting 10 digs defensively.

"C.J. was really on her game" in the second match, Green said.

Taylor Noga added 10 kills and two aces, Anjoilyn Vreeland tallied 19 digs and Melton had six block assists in the second match.

In the first match, Vreeland recorded 21 digs and Noga had 12. Six players were in on blocks, including Vera Pluharova (6 assists) and Johnson (5).
