Seawolves skate to exhibition hockey win over Simon Fraser

Five players scored goals to give UAA's new hockey coach an exhibition-game victory Friday night at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

The Seawolves scored four times in the second period to take home a 5-1 win over Simon Fraser in Matt Curley's first game as coach.

"Nice to finally play a competitive game," Curley said in a press release from UAA. "There is plenty for us to focus on, but in the same breath we did see some positive things which we can build off of for the future."

Nils Rygaard gave UAA a 1-0 lead in the first period, and Nolan Nicholas, Corey Renwick, Jordan Xavier and Jonah Renouf produced four straight goals in the second period. Renwick's goal, the night's only power-play goal, was followed 96 seconds later by Xavier's goal midway through the period.

Simon Fraser, a team from British Columbia, got its only goal with a minute left in the second period.

UAA outshot the Canadian school 35-14. Goaltenders Brody Claeys, Kris Carlson and Kristian Stead each played one period for the Seawolves.

UAA is back on the ice Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex for the annual Green and Gold scrimmage game at 3 p.m.

"(H)alf the guys in the locker room have an opportunity for a weekend sweep, and I am excited to see which half it will be," Curley said.
