New-look UAA men’s basketball team is off to a 2-0 start

The new guys are getting the job done so far for the UAA men's basketball team.

Tyler Brimhall and Niko Bevens, a pair of junior transfers, scored in double figures for the second straight day to lift UAA to a 73-65 win over Antelope Valley on Saturday.

Brimhall, a 6-foot-5 transfer from North Idaho College, poured in 27 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 9-of-9 shooting from the foul line. In Friday's 82-73 win over Antelope Valley, he pumped in 25 points.

Bevens, a 6-6 transfer from Division I Montana, added 14 points, all of them in the final eight minutes with the game still on the line. On Friday, he dropped in 16 points.

Brimhall, who grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to go with two steals and two assists, and Bevens, who was 4-for-4 in the final five minutes, both made the good first impressions during UAA's opening week of play.

But they aren't the team's only new faces. UAA returns a grand total of four players from last season.

Ten players saw action Saturday. Sophomore transfer Keenen Dowell made up for three turnovers with three steals, two assists and seven points; veterans Brian Pearson and Jack Macdonald chipped in six points apiece and combined for seven rebounds; Sjur Berg, back after skipping last season, had five points, three rebounds and two blocks; and Brennan Rymer, another returner, was good for five assists, four points and two steals.

"That was another good learning experience for us today," coach Rusty Osborne said in a release from the school. "Everyone is getting a chance to contribute and show the coaching staff what they can do."

UAA shot 43.4 percent a day after shooting 48 percent. The Seawolves were outrebounded 30-27 but took advantage of 11 steals to score 20 points in transition.

Antelope Valley, an NAIA team from California, dropped to 0-3. UAA is 2-0 going into a three-game road trip that begins with an exhibition game Tuesday against Division I Fresno State.
