UAA hockey team gets a goal, but not a victory

The UAA hockey team finally scored a goal, but the Seawolves weren't able to translate that into a win Saturday in Marquette, Michigan.

Northern Michigan scored the game-winning goal with 75 seconds left to eke out a 2-1 victory.

"This one stung a bit, which it should, and that's a good thing. It means that we are on the right path," UAA coach Matt Curley said in a release from the school.

The Wildcats dominated the Western Collegiate Hockey Association game with a 40-22 shot advantage, but UAA got a tremendous effort from goaltender Kris Carlson, who stopped 38 shots.

The Seawolves, who on Friday suffered a third straight shutout by losing 3-0 to the Wildcats, ended a stretch of more than 200 scoreless minutes when Jeremiah Luedtke scored at 4:35 of the second period.

The goal, assisted by Zach Court and Jordan Xavier, was UAA's first in 210 minutes and 32 seconds of action.

Luedtke's goal, his second of the season, tied the game 1-1. It stayed tied until Northern Michigan's Darien Craighead scored a power-play goal with 1:15 remaining.

"It was a gutty effort but unfortunately not quite enough to get over us over the hump," Curley said. "Kris Carlson was outstanding for us tonight and gave us a chance to be in the game right to the closing minutes."

The Wildcats (5-7-0 overall, 4-2-0 WCHA) were 1 for 4 on the power play. UAA (1-8-1, 0-7-1) was scoreless on two power plays.

Friday's loss, which came a week after UAA was held scoreless in a two-game home series against Bowling Green, marked the second time in the program's 40-year history that the Seawolves went three straight game without a goal. The only other time that happened was in February 1997, during former coach Dean Talafous' first season.
