A night after surprising the UAF hockey team at the Carlson Center, the Seawolves fell 2-1 Saturday night.

UAF scored a goal three minutes into the third period to break a tie and turn back UAA 2-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association game.

With the win, UAF drew even with the Seawolves in the four-game Governor’s Cup series. UAA won the first game of the series on Friday, 4-1; the final two games of the series are next month in Anchorage.

Kyle Marino gave UAF (9-17-2 overall, 9-12-1 WCHA) a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first period.

Fifty-eight seconds into the second period, UAA (3-23-2, 2-8-2) made it 1-1 on Carmine Buono’s slapshot. Nils Rygaard assisted on the Buono goal.

The game remained for about 22 minutes until Ryker Leer delivered the game-winner 2 minutes, 50 seconds into the third period.

Special teams once again came through for the Seawolves, who were 1 for 2 on the power play and killed all five of UAF’s power plays. For the weekend, UAA held the Nanooks scoreless on nine power plays.

UAF outshot the Seawolves 27-17. Kristian Stead finished with 25 saves for UAA, and Gustavs Grigals had 16 for the Nanooks.

UAA returns to Sullivan Arena on Friday and Saturday for games against Ferris State.
