Ferris State edges UAA hockey team

In a battle between Western Collegiate Hockey Association cellar-dwellers, Ferris State edged UAA 2-1 Friday night in front of a sparse Sullivan Arena crowd of 1,585.

The Bulldogs scored the game-winning goal with about seven minutes left to beat the only team that sits below them in the 10-team WCHA standings.

The Seawolves (3-24-2 overall, 2-19-2 WCHA) tied the game less than four minutes into the third period on Tanner Schachle’s first career goal. Schachle, a freshman from Wasilla, scored off a pass from Malcolm Hayes, with a second assist going to Carmine Buono.

Ferris State (8-21-2, 5-16-2) took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game on a goal by Cooper Zech. The Bulldogs got the game-winner from Coale Norris, whose one-timer got past UAA goalie Kristian Stead.

Stead finished with 16 saves for the Seawolves, who outshot the visitors 22-18. Roni Salmenkangas had 21 saves for Ferris State.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play -- UAA was 0 for 2 and Ferris State was 0 for 3.

The teams meet again Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
