Seawolves scrape out 5-set volleyball win with big fifth-set comeback

The UAA volleyball team scored the final three points of a Friday match to grab a five-set victory over Biola University at the Division II West Region Showcase in San Bernardino, California.

The Seawolves won 25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 21-25, 16-14 despite trailing 10-5 in the final set.

They scored five straight points to tie it 10-10 and the match was deadlocked three more times at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14.

UAA forged the final tie on an attack error by Biola, the first of three straight points for the Seawolves. They took a 15-14 lead on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Eve Stephens, and match point came on a kill by sophomore setter Ellen Floyd.

Floyd and Anjoilyn Vreeland came up with some big digs during the final stretch to help their team improve to 4-3 going into a Saturday morning match against Point Loma. First serve is at 10 a.m. ADT.

Stephens (16 kills, 10 digs) and Vanessa Hayes (14 kills, 13 digs) both racked up double-doubles, Floyd was good for 39 assists, 14 digs and four aces, Vera Pluharova had a hand in nine of UAA’s 12 blocks and Vreeland chipped in a match-high 15 digs.

Biola (2-3) received a match-high 21 kills from Sabrina Winslow.
