Big weekend carries UAA’s Vanessa Hayes to weekly volleyball honor

Vanessa Hayes, who piled up 36 kills in two matches last week for the UAA volleyball team, is the player of the week in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Hayes, a senior from Salem, Oregon, turned in her big week against two Oregon teams. She pounded 17 kills in a Thursday sweep of Western Oregon and tallied a career-high 19 in a four-set win over Concordia-Portland to help the Seawolves to hang onto second place in the GNAC with a pair of home-court victories.

She posted outstanding attack percentages in both matches — .438 against Western Oregon and .417 against Concordia.

Hayes is the third UAA player this season to earn the GNAC’s offensive player of the week award, joining Eve Stephens (Sept. 16-22) and Kayla McGlathery (Sept. 30-Oct. 6).

The Seawolves (18-6 overall, 13-3 GNAC) are on the road this week for key conference matches. They play league-leading Western Washington (23-1, 15-1) on Thursday and third-place Simon Fraser (16-8, 12-4) on Saturday. All three teams are eyeing postseason berths.
