UAA hockey team pays price for penalties

Penalties cost the UAA hockey team a shot at a road victory Friday night in Houghton, Michigan.

The Seawolves skated shorthanded on six occasions and gave up one power-play goal in a 2-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association loss to Michigan Tech.

UAA goaltender Kris Carlson made 40 saves and didn’t allow a goal for nearly 54 minutes, but the Seawolves were outshot 42-18 and riddled by eight penalties.

After two scoreless periods, UAA grabbed a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded, unassisted goal by freshman Nick Wicks, who scored his fourth goal of the season with 16 minutes left in the third period.

With seven minutes left, the Seawolves put Michigan Tech on the power play when Troy Robillard was called for checking from behind. Brian Halonen tied the game 44 seconds later and added a second goal — the game-winner — less than two minutes later while the teams were skating at even strength.

UAA (2-10-3 overall, 2-7-2-2 WCHA) pulled Carlson in favor of an extra attacker but it was the Huskies who finished the game with the man advantage after Tanner Schachle received a game misconduct for checking from behind with 44 seconds left.

The Seawolves finished with eight penalties for 27 minutes; Michigan Tech (9-7-0, 7-6-0-0) had three for six minutes. UAA was 0 of 2 on the power play and Tech was 1 of 6.

The teams play again Saturday.
