UAA hockey team collects one point in 3-3 tie with Lakers

The UAA hockey team’s grip on a Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff position got a little more tenuous Saturday.

Though the Seawolves earned one point in the standings by skating to a 3-3 tie with Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the team chasing them earned three points.

UAA is in eighth place with 19 points, two points ahead of ninth-place Ferris State, which beat Michigan Tech 2-1 Saturday to bring its point total to 17.

The top eight teams in the 10-team league will advance to the playoffs. There are eight games left in the regular season.

Luc Brown scored two goals and Brayden Camrud scored a goal and an assist for UAA (4-15-5 overall, 4-12-4 WCHA), which trailed two goals early. Goalie Brandon Perrone, a freshman making his second start of the season, stopped 20 shots, including two in overtime.

With the game still tied after regulation, the teams played a scoreless overtime period. In the second overtime, when teams skate 3-on-3, Lake Superior State triumphed with a goal from Pete Veillette.

That allowed the Lakers to collect two points in the WCHA standings, with the third point going to the Seawolves.

The Lakers (8-19-3, 6-11-3) are seventh in the league with 24 points, including five tallied this weekend with a win and tie against UAA.

Veillette, a sophomore forward, was a Seawolf killer in both games. On Friday, he scored the game-winning goal with 63 seconds left in regulation to boost the Lakers to a 3-2 victory.

UAA scored two of its Saturday goals on the power play to go 2 for 4 with the man advantage. The Lakers were 1 of 3.

The Seawolves were outshot 23-22, improving on the previous night’s effort when they were outshot 28-16.

UAA plays its next two games at home, a Friday-Saturday series against Minnesota State.
