Eight UAA athletes became NCAA All-Americans this week when the NCAA decided to extend those honors to every athlete who qualified for the 2020 Division II indoor track and field championships.

Set for March 13-14 in Alabama, the national championships were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three of the UAA runners who qualified for the national meet earned two All-America honors apiece. Emma Chelimo, Nancy Jeptoo and Ruth Cvancara were all members of UAA’s qualifying distance medley relay team, and all qualified in individual events as well — Chelimo at 3,000 meters, Jeptoo at 1,500 meters and Cvancara at 800 meters.

Also gaining All-American status was Marie Ries, the fourth member of the women’s relay team.

Earning All-America honors for the men’s team was the distance relay team of Felix Kemboi, Eduardo Orozco, Lawson Sims and David Sramek.
