Rain-snow combo could make for icy morning commute, weather service warns

A mix of rain and snow with temperatures near freezing could make roads icy roads during the morning commute in Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley, the National Weather Service said in a special statement.

"Temperatures should rise quickly above freezing just after daybreak, making for improving conditions," the weather service said.

The weather service also on Wednesday issued a wind warning for Thursday in the Anchorage area, with gusts to 80 mph possible at higher elevations and along Turnagain Arm.

Sustained winds of 35 to 55 mph were expected.

"Winds will increase rapidly Thursday morning. The strongest winds are expected by late morning into the early afternoon, with winds diminishing by midafternoon," the weather service said.
