Running for halibut out of Seward can be an investment, both in time and money. And anglers fishing for winners in the city's June halibut derby have to work for the bigger fish. That work includes a stomach-churning, three-hour trip across the Gulf of Alaska to Montague Island before the fishing even starts. The discomfort paid off for us, though. Our boat came back with 11 good-size halibut, and our top fish, a 87.6-pounder, was the biggest derby fish of the day.
