The Akiak Dash, a 70-mile sprint that starts and ends in Bethel, started Saturday at 2 p.m. in what race organizers called a modified mass start. Racers left the start area near a derelict vessel just seconds apart. Organizers thought the conditions were too icy for the normal mass start.

The winner, Greg Larson, crossed the finish line in Bethel at 8:24 p.m. Saturday after six hours and 25 minutes on the trail. Next was Thomas Carl at 8:43 p.m. Third-place finisher Katie Lamb was just minutes later, at 8:49 p.m.

Eleven mushers started the Akiak Dash, the shortest of three Kuskokwim 300 races this weekend; several appear to have scratched, according to the K300 website.
