The 49th Estate: The home improvers

The 49th Estate is our answer to MTV's "Cribs," a weekly tour of Alaska homes and interviews with their owners.

Edgar and Mimi Tinajero, a civil engineer and an Alaska Airlines flight attendant, purchased their Anchorage Hillside home 10 years ago. When Mimi bought a ceramic bathroom sink, it awakened a home improvement bug in the couple. From the art on the walls to the bathroom that started it all, the Tinajeros have been looking to change their living space for the better ever since.

Edgar did much of the work himself, laying tile in the dining room and helping to paint the sitting room, a focal point of the house. Mimi, the planner and designer, is always looking to match colors and make a warm, inviting home with a unique visual flair.

The faces of their three children, all college students, smile out from photos hanging on the den wall. The oldest, also named Edgar, is studying to be an civil engineer like his father.
