Body recovered from Ship Creek

Police and firefighters recovered a body from a mud island in Anchorage's Ship Creek Wednesday evening.

Police are still trying to determine the person's cause of death.

"Police dispatch received a call from citizens just before 9:30 p.m. reporting what appeared to be a human body lying face down in the creek," police wrote in a statement on the discovery.

APD Sgt. Shaun Henry, one of the officers who responded to the scene, said the male body — which hadn't yet been positively identified Wednesday evening — was discovered about 100 to 150 yards downstream of a dam.

"We got reports from some fishermen who were fishing in the middle of the river that they had found a deceased person, and we arrived and confirmed that," Henry said.

There were no immediate indications of foul play.

"Nothing suspicious, nothing evident of any kind of crime scene at this time," Henry said.
