Search called off for cruise ship crewmember who went overboard in Southeast Alaska

Coast Guard officials said Saturday that search efforts have been suspended for a 25-year-old woman who went overboard from the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl on Thursday in Southeast Alaska. The woman was a crew member, the Coast Guard reported in a Saturday statement. The incident was reported Thursday morning while the ship was passing through Lynn Canal, an inlet that connects Skagway and Haines to Juneau.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard, Petty Officer 1st Class Bill Colclough, said cruise ship personnel reported to authorities that the woman had jumped overboard.

The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers canvassed 340 square miles of Lynn Canal before calling the search off at 4:28 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

"We searched extensively with the Alaska State Troopers with multiple aircraft and surface resources for more than 42 hours," Petty Officer 1st Class Blake Fleming, command duty officer for the Coast Guard in Juneau, said in the statement.

Norwegian Cruise Line, which owns the cruise ship, did not return a request for comment.
