Troopers recover body of ATV rollover victim from Interior Alaska creek

The body of a 55-year-old Anchorage man was recovered from Brushkana Creek on Thursday, three days after he rolled his ATV and fell into the water, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Officials quickly responded to the scene of the accident on Monday off the Denali Highway, but they could not recover the body of Walter Maillelle due to bad weather and high water.

Responders from Cantwell responded with a boat capable of navigating high water, but by the time they arrived Maillelle's body could not be found, and the search was called off for the night, troopers said. On Tuesday, people searched unsuccessfully through the day.

Officials were on standby the following day, waiting for the skies to clear and the creek's waters to fall.

A trooper helicopter responded to the Interior on Thursday to assist with an unrelated search and rescue. The crew was called off that search and redirected to conduct a follow-up search for Maillelle, according to an online dispatch posted Thursday.

At about 1 p.m., the remains were located and recovered, the dispatch says.

Maillelle's family has been informed of the recovery. The State Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy, troopers said.
