Homer business fire destroys commercial fishing boats

Several commercial fishing boats were destroyed in a fire at a Homer boatyard Friday morning, according to city officials.

The Homer Police Department said the fire started at about 6 a.m. in a large workshop at the Northern Enterprises Boat Yard. The shop is used for repairing and painting fishing boats.

Four boats in the workshop Friday morning were ruined in the fire, according to the company, which said it rents out the workshop for people who need to fix their boats.

Homer Police Chief Mark Robl said the fire was still burning shortly after 11 a.m. but had been brought under control. No one was hurt, he said.

The boatyard is on Kachemak Drive, northeast of the Homer Spit. According to the Northern Enterprises website, the boatyard comprises 30 acres and 20 buildings. The company offers year-round boat storage, haulout service and commercial leasing for retail, office and repair shops.
