Manokotak man held for assault after 5 days barricaded in home

A Manokotak man who spent five days barricaded inside his home after allegedly assaulting a woman surrendered Thursday to Alaska State Troopers following a standoff and negotiations.

A Thursday dispatch said troopers responded to the village after receiving a report early Sunday that a woman was being treated at a local home for head injuries. Troopers said they subsequently learned that 25-year-old Geoffrey Tugatuk "had physically assaulted a household member with a handgun."

When troopers found Tugatuk barricaded in Manokotak, a community of about 480 people 25 miles west of Dillingham, they obtained an arrest warrant and tried to talk him out of the home.

"After several hours of failed negotiations, and determining that Tugatuk was the sole occupant of the residence, troopers departed, evacuating the victim to a safe location outside of the community," troopers wrote. "After several days of failed attempts to communicate with Tugatuk, on (Thursday) troopers, with the assistance of local community leaders, convinced Tugutak to surrender peacefully."

Tugatuk was held at the Dillingham Jail without bail, on what troopers described as "multiple domestic-violence felony assault and misconduct involving weapons charges." Specific charges against him weren't listed in court records Friday morning.
