Anchorage police seek homeless camp stabbing suspect

Anchorage police are looking for a 19-year-old accused of stabbing a female acquaintance at a homeless camp Thursday evening.

A 911 call came in around 7:30 p.m. about a man who stabbed a woman in a wooded area near 19th Avenue and C Street. The caller told police the assailant knew the victim.

The suspect was later identified as Johnathan Anaruk. Police determined that three people were together at a homeless camp when an argument broke out. Anaruk took personal items from another man at the camp during the argument, police said. Anaruk was confronted and a fight ensued.

"During the altercation, Anaruk had cut the female with a knife and also physically assaulted her," an Anchorage Police Department release said.

Anaruk fled on foot. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have obtained an arrest warrant for Anaruk on various assault charges and theft. But officers have been unable to locate him and are now asking for the public's help.

Police say Anaruk is believed to be 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighs 155 pounds and has brown hair and eyes. He is often seen in the Gambell, Fireweed and Midtown areas.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police immediately.
