Man wanted in Anchorage kidnapping case arrested in Fairbanks

Update, 10 a.m. Monday: The Fairbanks Police Department said Monday morning that they had arrested William Burgess, one of two men wanted in connection with an Anchorage assault and kidnapping, at an apartment in the Interior Alaska city.

Fairbanks police got a tip shortly after midnight that Burgess was at an apartment on the 1000 block of Kellum Street, and arrested him there on a $250,000 warrant. He was taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.

Original Story: One man has been arrested and two more remain at large after a kidnapping in Anchorage earlier this month, according to police.

The Anchorage Police Department is seeking William Burgess, 18, and Serge Azede II, 24, who police believe kidnapped a woman and left her zip-tied in the woods near Eklutna Lake.

Police first got a call about the kidnapping just before 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14. A woman told police that she and her friend had driven to Second Avenue and Bunn Street to pick up the friend's purse when Burgess approached the car. Burgess pointed a gun at the woman and ordered her to exit the vehicle, then drove away with her friend still in the passenger seat, police said.

A second call came to police at 11:41 p.m. from the victim, who had been picked up by a passerby on Eklutna Lake Road, about 25 miles north of Anchorage. The woman told police that she had been driven from Second Avenue to a second location, where she and Burgess got into a different vehicle occupied by Jean Vagao, 19, and Azede.

The four then drove to the area of Eklutna Lake, police said.

"During the drive the victim was physically assaulted and zip tied. The victim was left behind in the woods near the lake," police spokesperson Renee Oistad wrote.

The woman broke free of the zip ties and walked to Eklutna Lake Road, where she was able to call police.

Police believe that the attack was targeted, as the woman and Burgess knew each other.

Vagao has since been arrested but police are still searching for Burgess and Azede.

Burgess is described as 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, and may be in the Interior city of Fairbanks. He is charged with kidnapping, second- and third-degree assault, and second-degree sexual assault.

Azede is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 191 pounds. He is charged with kidnapping.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of their whereabouts to call Anchorage police at 907-786-8900 or Fairbanks police at 907-450-6500, or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP or online.
