An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a man found on Campbell Airstrip Road last month.
Few other details were immediately available in the case.
Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion announced the charges of first- and second-degree murder against Kutay Bangout, indicted Thursday by a grand jury in the death of 22-year-old Michael Miquan Mitchell, in a Friday statement. Bangout had been in custody since last week, when he was held on a second-degree theft charge.
"The theft charge stemmed from the investigation," Campion said. "Our theory is that he was in possession of a stolen firearm, which may or may not be involved in the homicide."
Police first received reports of Mitchell's body being spotted on Campbell Airstrip Road at about 8:30 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 22. Investigators released few details at the time, closing Campbell Airstrip Road for a few hours and calling on residents of the Stuckagain Heights neighborhood to provide information.
"Several patrol officers responded and identified the body as (Mitchell)," Campion wrote. "Mitchell appeared to have been shot multiple times in the head and torso."
Police received help from "several Anchorage citizens and businesses" in the investigation, as well as Alaska State Troopers, Campion wrote.
Campion declined to immediately provide further details on the case against Bangout, citing continuing cooperation with Anchorage police.
"The investigation's ongoing and I want to respect APD's efforts to nail down the case," Campion said.
APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro also declined to discuss details of the case against Bangout due to ongoing investigative work, saying only that additional charges in the case were possible.
Bangout is scheduled to be arraigned in Anchorage Superior Court on Monday, when his bail will likely be set.
