Man dies after his aneurysm bursts during deadly fight in Juneau, charges say

A Juneau man died in July after his aneurysm burst during a fight, and the man who allegedly kicked him in the head is facing criminal charges that include second-degree murder, according to court documents.

The fight happened outside Juneau's Downtown Transit Center on June 30, said the criminal complaint filed by Assistant District Attorney Amy Page.

The complaint said surveillance video showed several people sleeping in the transit center's waiting area when Aaron Monette, 56, walked in and sat down. Then a man, later identified as 51-year-old David Evenson, got up from the floor of the waiting area "and appears to have words with Monette," the complaint said.

"Evenson stands up, walks over to where Monette is seated and gets into Monette's face," the complaint said.

At 12:55 p.m., Monette walked out of the waiting area and on his way appeared to stop and say something to Evenson, according to the complaint. Evenson then got up and followed him outside, it said.

The complaint said additional surveillance video taken by a bus waiting in the area showed Evenson punching Monette once in the side of the head. Monette fell to the ground and Evenson kicked him in the face, according to the complaint.

"Monette slumps onto his right side and remains motionless there until JPD officers exit the nearby substation and find him," the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Juneau Police Department Detective Nick Garza interviewed a woman who said Evenson came to her house right after the fight and told her that a guy had woken him up inside of the transit center.

He told her that "he didn't even hit the guy hard," the complaint said.

"Evenson was planning on saying goodbye to his kids and turning himself in," it said.

Evenson's court-appointed attorney could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

The complaint said Monette was found unconscious outside the transit center. He was taken to the hospital and later flown to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center where he died on July 5, according to the complaint.

The pathologist who conducted the autopsy on his body told the detective that Monette had a pre-existing aneurysm that burst due to the trauma of the fight and contributed to his death, according to the complaint.

Evenson was arrested July 7 and charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. He has 33 prior criminal convictions, according to the complaint.

On Wednesday, he was in custody at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
