Anchorage man accused of assaulting woman and starting fire in home after argument, police say

An Anchorage man faces attempted murder, assault and arson charges after pouring bleach on a female relative, injuring her head and lighting a fire outside her bedroom early Wednesday morning, police said in an alert.

Officers and firefighters were dispatched just after 3 a.m. to a house fire and disturbance in the 14600 block of Lake Otis Parkway, police said. Investigators determined that a man, who police identified as 47-year-old William Day, and an adult female relative who also lives in the home had argued before the situation escalated.

When the woman tried to walk away and go into her room, the man followed her, then “poured bleach onto the female and assaulted her with a sharp object causing a major laceration to her head,” police said.

The woman pushed the man out of the room and locked herself inside so she could call for help, according to police. At that point, the man “ignited a fire on the door of the room, which quickly engulfed the surrounding area of the home in flames,” police said.

The woman fled into the backyard using a different exit, police said. Medics later took her to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers called the man out of the home and took him into custody without incident, police said.
