Nikiski woman, 22, killed in crash during vehicle chase with troopers

A 22-year-old woman was killed in a vehicle crash while fleeing troopers in the Nikiski area Saturday.

Troopers tried to pull a Subaru driven by Olivia Mapes of Nikiski over for “swerving across the center and fog lines” on the Kenai Spur Highway around 2 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.

“A short pursuit began," according to troopers. Mapes didn’t stop at an intersection and crashed into a pickup truck pulling an ATV trailer, near the intersection of the Kenai Spur Highway and Island Lake Road in Nikiski.

Mapes died at the scene. She had not been wearing a seatbelt, troopers said. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.
