Top candidate announced for UAF interim chancellor

University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen announced Monday that he had selected Dana Thomas as the top candidate for the interim chancellor position at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Thomas, a UAF alumnus, served as the UA vice president for academic affairs and research from 2012 to 2014. If appointed, Thomas would take over the job currently held by Mike Powers, who will step down as interim commissioner on August 1.

Johnsen said in a news release Monday that he would make a final decision on the interim chancellor position June 30. In the next few weeks, he said he planned to consult with UAF governance and hoped to receive feedback from the community.

Johnsen announced last month that he would not move forward with a search for UAF's next chancellor. Instead, he said, he would appoint a new interim chancellor as officials looked at a new accreditation model.
