Search in progress for hiker missing on mountain near Sitka

Searchers were deployed Wednesday to keep looking for a Sitka man last seen Monday afternoon on a mountain near the Southeast Alaska community, troopers said.

Word that 37-year-old Michael Hansen hadn't returned from Mount Verstovia reached troopers Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement.

"Hansen was last seen (at about 3:20 p.m. Monday), descending the trail in the area between Picnic Rock and the summit of Verstovia," troopers wrote. "Searchers from Sitka Search and Rescue and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter have been conducting a search of the Mount Verstovia Trail."

It wasn't clear what communications or survival gear Hansen was carrying, troopers spokesperson Megan Peters said in an email. Coast Guard helicopters shuttled searchers into the area Wednesday.

"From what we were told, (Hansen) was wearing street clothes and a daypack," Peters wrote.

Anyone with information on Hansen's whereabouts is asked to call troopers at 907-465-4000.
