Rescue attempt for missing kayaker at Eklutna Lake called off

The Anchorage and Chugiak fire departments were searching for the body of a missing kayaker at Eklutna Lake Monday night.

The fire department got a call around 4:55 p.m. about the kayaker. The Chugiak Fire Department immediately responded and then requested AFD send a dive team, said AFD Deputy Chief Jodie Hettrick.

She said the kayaker ended up in the water, but her responders didn't know how it happened.

A rescue was called off around 8:30 p.m. The divers were remaining at the lake and might make an attempt to recover the body, Hettrick said. That recovery would depend on weather conditions as well as the location of the body, she said.

Eklutna Lake, a popular recreation spot in Chugach State Park, is 300 feet deep in some areas. The divers' equipment allows them to go 60 feet deep.
