About 95,000 Polaris ATVs are being recalled because of a defective part that can overheat causing a fire or burn riders, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.The ATVs were first recalled in June of 2005, but since then the commission has received 372 additional reports of smoking and/or melted electronic control modules. There have also been 20 reports of fires, nine damaging property. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled ATVS are from years 2005 through 2006 and their models are Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler 500. The model and serial numbers are printed on a decal attached to the front side of the radiator (Sportsman) or the top of the front cab cover (Scrambler 500).
Consumers should disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the battery when the ATV is not in use. Consumers should contact their local Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair.
