Eagle River man dies in Seward Highway crash

An Eagle River commercial fisherman was killed a three-car accident on the Seward Highway on Thursday night near Summit Lake, Alaska State Troopers said.

Donald Setters, 61, died after his gold 1998 Jeep Cherokee, heading north, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a minivan heading the opposite direction.

The van, a 1993 Ford Aerostar, was driven by JoeAnna Hoogland, 26, of Chugiak. She was forced into a ditch, where her van rolled several times. She had to be extracted and was taken to a hospital, according to a trooper report.

Setters' Jeep spun sideways on the road and was hit by a 2004 Dodge Ram, driven by Paul Popovich, 21, of Anchorage. Popovich was also taken to the hospital with injuries, troopers said.

The van was smashed and the Jeep was damaged beyond recognition.

Setters was headed home from fishing out of Seward, according to his nephew, Jerry Webre.

Setters was a lifelong Alaskan who loved to hunt, fish and garden. He was married and had two college-age children, Webre said.

"It's a huge, devastating loss to his family. He was the sole provider," Webre said.

Setters was not wearing a seat belt, according to troopers. They are still investigating what caused him to veer into oncoming traffic.
