Dunbar 76th at NCAA championships

Former Kodiak star Trevor Dunbar finished 76th in the Division I men's cross-country championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Junior Samuel Chelanga of Liberty University won the men's title, setting a new course record of 28 minutes, 41.3 seconds in the 10-K race, which featured a field of 250 runners.

Dunbar, a freshman at the University of Portland, finished two minutes back in a time of 30:42.

Only four freshmen runners finished ahead of Dunbar, including his Portland teammate Joash Osoro, who was 67th. Portland finished 13th in the team standings. Oklahoma State won the men's title with Oregon finishing second.

Anglea Bizzarri of Illinois, won the women's individual title, finishing the 6-K race in 19:46. Villanova claimed the team title.

Dunbar advanced to the nationals after finishing 12th in the West Region in a time of 31:00.28.

In high school, Dunbar won three straight Class 4A cross-country titles for the Kodiak Bears. In 2008, he capped off his prep cross-country career by setting a course record of 15:07.8 on the 5-K layout at Palmer High School.
