Bryce Walsh of Chicago and Michael McClintock of Wooster, Ohio, both broke the 24-hour barrier in the 400-mile Fireweed 400 bike race Saturday, but neither came close to the course record in the race that goes from Sheep Mountain Lodge to Valdez on the Glenn and Richardson highways.
Walsh won the race in 22 hours, 29 minutes and 2 seconds. Less than half an hour behind him was McClintock, who clocked 22:53:07. Still standing is the record of 19:56:32 set by Jeff Oakley of Fairbanks.
Carolina van den Bulk of Ontario was the lone woman to take on the 400-mile race. She finished in 28:31:59, well off Janice Tower's record of 25:12.
Jens Beck and Shannon Donley captured the 50-mile solo victories and Lise Falskow and Eric Breintenberger topped the 100-mile solo categories. Beck was the only man to beat Donley; he finished in 1:52:25 and she finished in 2:08.30.
The annual race is the biggest and, in the case of the 400-miler, longest in Alaska, drawing 806 cyclists.
Results of the 200-mile race, which ended in Valdez, weren't available Saturday night. All results should be posted at firewood400.com.
