Chugiak and South stay alive

After rain postponed Monday's games, the American Legion state baseball tournament resumed Tuesday with two close, high scoring games.

Chugiak beat West 11-10 in 10 innings and South rallied past Service 8-6 to stay alive in the 11-team tournament at Mulcahy Stadium. Five of the 11 teams, including West and Service, have been eliminated.

Pitchers for Chugiak Post 33 walked 16 batters but still managed to beat West Post 1 in 10 innings, 11-10.

With the game tied 10-10 with two out in the bottom of the 10th, Deven Ferris turned an attempt to steal third base into the winning run thanks to a throwing error by West catcher Hugo Delacruz.

Chugiak put a runner into scoring position when West pitcher Blake Mendenhall issued back-to-back walks to Ferris and Matthew Sullivan.

Sullivan went 2 for 4, scored three times and had two RBIs and Chase Wilson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Chugiak. Sullivan also earned the win, pitching a perfect 10th inning. He was the eighth Chugiak pitcher, and only the second who didn't walk a batter.

In Tuesday's other game, South Post 4 exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning to come back and beat Service Post 28. Down 3-0 heading into the fourth, South put 10 straight batters on base to grab the lead. The Wolverines banged out five singles, including one by Patrick Enslow that drove in two runs.

Enslow went 4 for 5 with a run and 3 RBIs. Hayden Karnos went 2 for 5, scoring twice and earning one RBI.

South reliever Bryan Baker gave up three hits in four innings for the win. Garret Brown took the lost, giving up seven runs over 31/3 innings.

The tournament continues today with a pair of winner's bracket games that were rained on Monday -- Wasilla against Fairbanks and Kenai against Dimond. Most of the bracket has been tweaked because of the rainouts, including the time of Friday's championship game, which is at 5:30 p.m., with an if-necessary game planned for Saturday.
