Bryce Canyon National Park, technically, is not a canyon. The 56-square-mile park, located in Utah, contains a series of natural amphitheaters, the largest being 12 miles long. The red and orange rock formations, called hoodoos, look more like they belong in a cave rather than the outdoors. Less visited than the Grand Canyon, but no less grand, the beauty of this park will have you gasping, mouth wide open, at the visual splendor of its colorful pinnacles jutting into a perfectly clear blue sky.

The Rim Run, a five-mile walk/run along the canyons edges, takes place in August, and skiing and snowmachining abound all winter long.

Air tours that take off from Salt Lake City and Las Vegas not only fly over Bryce Canyon, they also include the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. Private tours also are available.
