Wine of the week: Molly Dooker 's the Violinist 2010

From the genius of Sarah and Sparky Marquis comes a 2010 verdelho named the Violinist. Check for it in the smaller wine shops -- it will be worth your effort. The winery's name is Molly Dooker, Australian slang for being left-handed, which the Marquises are. Verdelho is a lovely, obscure grape from the island of Madeira, and the Australian versions rock. White fruit perfume and citrus viscosity match wits with a curiously styled acid. This wine is huge and hangs on the palate. Let it sit there. You'll feel the viscosity and acid vie for position. The killer lime peel finish is balanced and beautiful. This is a powerful white -- approach it with caution and food. Costs about $25.
