Clarke wins Pac-12 shot put crown

Anchorage's Jordan Clarke, the NCAA's reigning shot put champion, captured the shot put title at the Pac-12 track and field championships Saturday in Eugene, Ore.

Clarke, an Arizona State junior and a Bartlett High graduate, triumphed with a toss of 65 feet, 2 inches. The throw was more than four inches better than the toss of 64-9.75 that Clarke recorded to win last year's NCAA outdoor title.

Clarke, who also won this year's NCAA indoor shot put championship, had the top two throws Saturday. Before breaking the 65-foot barrier in his sixth and final attempt, he threw 63-6.25 in the third round.

Also Saturday, Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar won the second heat of the men's 1,500 meters, clocking a time of 3 minutes, 44.62 seconds. A sophomore at Oregon, Dunbar has two races Sunday, the 1,500 finals and the 5,000 meters.
