It was a big night for the Pilots and Bucs. The Pilots creamed the Oilers 12-0 to take a two-game lead in the Alaska Baseball League pennant race, while the Bucs blasted five home runs -- including three in one inning -- to trip the Chinooks 13-2.
The Pilots wrapped up a rewarding trip to the Kenai Peninsula, where they went fishing for wins and got more than they dared dream.
Three pitchers combined for a two-hitter to lead the Pilots a victory that was their third in four games at Coral Seymour Park. Pilots general manager Jon Dyson thinks it's the first time since 2002 the team has taken three of four games in Kenai, and it couldn't have happened at a better time. With the season winding down, the Pilots (19-11) and Oilers (17-13) were tied for the league lead when the series began.
Dyson said the team hoped to take at least two of the games. "It's certainly a bonus (to win three) and we're glad to go down there and do that," he said.
Kyle Freeland struck out seven, walked three and allowed one hit in six innings for Tuesday's victory. Cody Gray allowed one hit and struck out two in two innings of relief and closer Travis Pitcher struck out one in a hitless ninth inning.
Support came in the form of a 20-hit attack. Micah Green and Chris Mariscal contributed home runs, with Green belting a three-run blast in the eighth and Mariscal hitting a solo shot in the third.
• In Anchorage, the Bucs clobbered the ball while clobbering Chugiak to move into third place with a 13-14 record, 4 1/2 games behind the Pilots.
Tanner Rust homered twice -- a two-run shot in the fourth and grand slam in the seventh -- while Danny Susdorf, Collin Ferguson and Ryan Leonards all ripped home runs in the sixth inning.
