A Bethel police officer shot and killed a man after responding to a disturbance at a home Tuesday in the Southwest Alaska city, according to Alaska State Troopers, who are investigating the incident.
Few details on the shooting were available Wednesday, either from troopers or the Bethel Police Department.
According to a trooper dispatch posted online, Bethel officers received the disturbance report and headed to a home late Tuesday. The response "resulted in an officer fatally shooting an adult male," the dispatch says.
At the police department's request about 10:45 p.m., three Bethel-based troopers arrived and secured the scene, troopers said. Additional state personnel with the Alaska Bureau of Investigations flew to Bethel early Wednesday to gather evidence and investigate the incident.
Bethel Police Chief Larry Elarton would not to answer any questions about the incident, including why the man was shot and what sort of disturbance led police to the home.
Neither the officer nor the man who was shot have been named. The dead man, who will be identified once his next of kin are notified, is expected to be flown to Anchorage for an autopsy, troopers said.
