James Fallows, National Book Award winner and correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, and his wife, Deborah, a linguist and expert on China (author of "Dreaming in Chinese"), are touring Alaska as part of the Bartlett Lecture series. Two Anchorage events are planned. The first is a meet-and-greet at noon on Monday on the second floor of the UAA Campus Bookstore -- the UAA Tech Zone. The second is a lecture at 7 p.m. on that day in Williamson Auditorium. Both events are free. The Fallowses will also be speaking in Juneau on Sunday and in Fairbanks on Tuesday.
Do it Delta style
Delta Junction mom and housewife Ana White, whose ana-white.com blog site draws millions of readers from around the world, will be signing copies of her new book, "The Handbuilt Home," at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Barnes and Noble, 200 E. Northern Lights Blvd. White's easy-to-follow plans are designed for women -- and others -- who have never held a power tool before. The results are said to rival styles from Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel but cost a whole lot less because you're the builder and you're not paying for out-of-state shipping. Get the book, read the blog and save thousands of dollars.
A toast to our vets
"Salute to Veterans" will be presented by the Anchorage Concert Chorus at 4 p.m. on Veterans Day, Sunday. The singers will be joined in patriotic and American folk music by the UAA Wind Ensemble and the University Singers. A highlight will be guest pianist Timothy Smith, who will be the featured soloist in a performance of "Rhapsody in Blue." It takes place in Atwood Concert Hall, which is where you can also hear the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The program will include Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 and the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with guest soloist Elmar Oliveira. Tickets for both concerts are available at centertix.net.
