Firefighters battle South Anchorage blaze

Flames engulfed a three-story house in South Anchorage, and dozens of firefighters responded to gain control of the blaze, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

A call from someone at the Southpark Loop home, south of Rabbit Creek Road, called 911 to report the fire just before 5 p.m., said Andrew Good, a lead dispatcher with the fire department. About 20 fire-fighting apparatuses, including engines and tanker trucks, were at the burning house, with firefighters working to contain and extinguish it, Good said. A team entered the home to make sure no one was trapped inside, but the person believed to be the lone occupant escaped, Good said.

"If it's safe to do so, we always try to do a search on the inside, but once it becomes unsafe conditions, they fight from the exterior," Good said.

Good said he expected the firefighters to be at the scene well into Wednesday night.
