UAA women drop Saint Martin's

Going on the road was just what the UAA women's basketball team needed, it seems.

The Seawolves survived a late scare from Saint Martin's on Saturday, hanging on for a 48-45 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win in Lacey, Wash.

After losing a pair of home games, the Seawolves (10-7, 4-5 GNAC) have won two straight on the road in the first half of a four-game road trip.

Alli Madison led the charge Saturday, accumulating 17 points, five assists and four steals and Jessica Madison hit three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points. Alysa Horn added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Kylie Burns contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Saint Martin's (11-8, 4-5 GNAC) trailed by 13 at halftime, but chipped away in the second half to make a game of it. The Saints never led in the second half, but trailed by just one with 1:28 remaining. A pair of free throws by Jessica Madison put UAA up 48-45 with 20 seconds to play. The UAA defense stymied any chance for the Saints to tie, Horn stealing the ball as the final second ticked off the clock.

Chelsey Haskey led Saint Martin's with a game-high 18 points. She also pulled in seven rebounds and hit several big shots down the stretch to help her team battle back. Taylor MacKenzie chipped in eight points for the Saints, before fouling out.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, both hitting less than 39 percent from the field. Both teams made 17 field goals, but UAA found a slight advantage from the 3-point line, hitting eight long bombs to Saint Martin's three. Taking care of the ball was a struggle for both teams, the Seawolves losing the turnover battle 21-19.

UAA has won four straight and 10 of its last 11 meetings with Saint Martin's.

Continued success on the road will be a challenge for the Seawolves, who continue their trip this week with visits to Simon Fraser and Western Washington, the top two teams in the league.
