The East boys and Dimond girls romped to first-round victories Tuesday in the Cook Inlet Conference basketball tournament at West High.
Austin Hess put on a shooting clinic in leading East to a 79-64 victory over Bartlett. He hit 10 of his 13 field goal attempts, including two of three from 3-point range, en route to a game-high 25 points.
Jarred Laws added 18 points and Xavier Johnson 14 for the Thunderbirds, who led 19-7 after the first quarter. Michael Bond's eight rebounds helped East to a 42-32 rebounding edge.
Marquis White poured in 21 points and Iziah Sherman-Newsome added 18 for Bartlett.
In the girls game, Dimond hit 62 percent of its shot in the second half to storm past Service 65-16.
Four players scored in double figures for the Lynx, including Sierra Afoa, who tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Kaylynn Haywood made seven of eight shots to match Afoa's 14 points, Aminata Cole hit five of 11 for 11 points and Tara Thompson finished with 10 points, seven assists and seven steals for Dimond.
Sarah Ihde's nine points led Service.
First-round games continue through Thursday at West. Semifinals are Friday and championship games are Saturday. The top two boys teams and the top two girls teams are assured berths in the Class 4A state tournament.
